The Role of Your Overall Health in Deciding Whether LASIK is Right for You

YOUR OVERALL HEALTH

It’s important to consider your overall health in determining whether you are a suitable candidate for LASIK. Certain conditions, such as being under 18 years of age, that are not even related to your eyes can increase surgical risks or make your surgery outcomes less predictable. Health conditions that might make you less suitable as a LASIK candidate include the following:

  • Pregnant or nursing

  • Any condition or disease that affects your immune system and might make you more prone to infections, such as HIV, rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune disorders, or lupus

  • Diabetes

  • Taking an immunosuppressive medication

  • Depression

  • Chronic pain conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome, migraines, fibromyalgia, etc.

If you have any of the following conditions, you should also make your surgeon aware of it, as these conditions can affect your surgery or recovery:

  • Muscle imbalance

  • Severe dry eyes

  • Previous eye surgery or injury

  • Keloid scarring

  • Back problems

  • Claustrophobia

  • Psychological problems

REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS

It is important that you have realistic expectations regarding the outcome of your surgery.

Although some of our LASIK patients start out in glasses, the person who is the best LASIK candidate is typically wearing contact lenses now and wants to see better. Some people just want to simplify their life by not having to deal with contact lenses or glasses. They’re also, typically, somewhere between age 20 and 59.
