Why Consider Getting LASIK?
For many people, the decision to have LASIK comes down to the ability to enjoy a changed lifestyle. For readers, athletes, nature lovers, and anyone else who enjoys an active lifestyle, LASIK can help quite a bit. For example, for anyone who enjoys photography, having contact lenses or glasses up close to the eye and the camera, can create difficulties.
LASIK can also save a tremendous amount of frustration. People who are outside and inside, especially during the heat of summer, may find they can particularly benefit from LASIK. If you’ve ever worn glasses on a really hot and humid day, your glasses will fog up when you get out of an air-conditioned car. If you then you go into an air-conditioned building, your glasses will fog up again. Needless to say, this can be very frustrating. LASIK can eliminate those problems.
Additionally, LASIK can help you save time in your day. Some contact lens wearers spend between 10 and 15 minutes a day inserting contact lenses, removing contact lenses, ordering more contact lenses, buying solutions, adding wetting eye drops, and so forth. With LASIK, you get all of that time back to yourself. Say you’re traveling; just having LASIK makes all that so much more convenient. The same is also true for people who enjoy camping or hunting and who want to be free from glasses or contact lenses for a night or a weekend or something like that—it’s a savings of time and effort.
Having LASIK can also help to eliminate quite a bit of fear. Imagine: you are so nearsighted that you couldn’t find your glasses without wearing your glasses, and you’re in a hotel room. You’re startled in the middle of the night, and they drop underneath the bed. It’s an unfamiliar room you’re in. There is nothing more frightening or worrisome than wondering how you’re going to find your glasses when you’re not familiar with the room. What happens many times with people who are so nearsighted is that they step on their glasses and break them while they are looking for them. All that goes away with LASIK
LASIK can also be cheaper than contact lenses and far less expensive than glasses. For most people, there are three options for contact lens. One is worn for medical indications. Then, you’ve got your extended wear, which can be worn for two weeks to a month or so. They are supplied in intervals of two weeks or months. Then, you’ve got your daily disposable contact lenses. The daily disposables are the ones that do not need any solution, do not need any cleaning or sterilization. When you take them out of your eye, you throw them away in the garbage.
This is not only expensive, but also bad for the environment because it comes in a foil pack. You’re using and creating lots of trash, and landfill waste. Also, it’s not good for your eyes in any of those circumstances. Sleeping in them overnight is a really bad idea. Your eyes need oxygen to be healthy, and the contact lens blocks the clear passage of oxygen. Daily disposable wear contact lenses cost about $1–$3 a day. That comes to about $365–$1,000 per year.
LASIK is also more affordable than continually wearing glasses. A lot of the cost of the glasses is the frame. If you’re buying designer frames, and you’re buying a high-end lens that protects you from the sun, this could easily be a $300 to $1,000 purchase. If you’re fashion-conscious and like to change your glasses style every year, you’ve got that cost on top of it. People who buy glasses and change their frames every year often spend what amounts to $5 a day on those designer frames. For many people, the option of being glasses free is a much better choice.
